Biz the Clown is an authentic American Style Circus Clown. He has performed for the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, and has a custom comedy juggling show ready for your next special occasion.
In 1996, Biz began his journey into clowning when he attended the Ringling
Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. This intense program
assembled teachers of clowning from all over the world, including
longtime Moscow circus director Yuri Belov and MacArthur Genius Grant
recipient Bill Irwin. It included classes in mime, improvisation,
juggling, equilibristics, tumbling, clown make-up, circus history,
and of course, clowning. He spent all of 1997 traveling with
Ringling Brothers as the circus’s advance clown. These amazing
experiences were the foundation upon which he has built his career
and artistic vision.
He has been a professional performer
for more than 15 years, performing as Biz the Clown in his comedy
juggling show, working as a stage combat specialist, and acting in
local and nationally touring shows.
Biz's artistic vision involves both
the parts of clowning that are universal and the parts that are
quintessentially American. Every nation and culture in the world has
a clowning tradition. A well executed clown show is entertaining to
audiences regardless of culture, class, race, age, or even language.
At the same time, the American style of circus clowning is a unique
tradition, one that belongs to all Americans, just like jazz or
baseball. In both performances and teaching, Biz tries to blend the
universal with the American clowning tradition to create shows that
are as entertaining to watch as they are to perform. He accomplishes
this using traditional theater acting, clowning, or skill routines
such as juggling, object manipulation, and diabolo. As a teacher and
director of student productions, he strives to create shows that use
the best skills available to each student. He works hard to make
sure that every student is allowed a moment to shine at whatever part
of the class they have responded to the strongest. His style of
performance, with its heavy emphasis on movement and character, is
ideal for educational settings and can stand on its own or can be
integrated easily with specific educational goals. He considers it
an honor and a duty to share this quintessentially American art form
with a new generation of young performers.
